It took under three years before gamers heard about the Xbox One’s two successor. Xbox One S is the first one and it has been available since August. Project Scorpio is the next piece of hardware coming from Microsoft, but what’s beyond that is unknown.
With mid-generation console upgrades now a thing, it can be tough for gamers to think about how console cadences will change. At E3 2015, Microsoft didn’t unveil a new pattern in how they’ll launch consoles. With that said, is there any sort of timeline for Microsoft’s Project Scorpio successor?
Phil Spencer, who is the head of Xbox, says publicly there isn’t a plan in place right now. Of course though, this is the gaming industry and things can change. “We’ve got no set timeline on when we need to sell you the next console after Scorpio,” Spencer told Kotaku.
“We look and say, are there important consumer features? We looked at 4k TVs, we could see the uptake in 4K. People want to play at higher resolutions, higher frame rates — but the next thing after that? I don’t know what it is yet! I don’t need to give you a reason to buy a new console every year. In fact, I don’t actually want to!”
Xbox One S is the slim version of the original Xbox One system, though the former is capable of HDR. Project Scorpio is the next new system in line at Microsoft and it will be capable of far more than either of those two consoles.
Project Scorpio will be available during the holiday period of 2017, so we are a ways off from then. Microsoft has held off pricing details for the system, and really, don’t expect to hear about that until summer 2017. It’ll be interesting as always to see how things surrounding Microsoft’s new system will continue to evolve. Stick around here at We Write Things for more on Project Scorpio.
