Microsoft is the one who first introduced We Happy Few to the world back at E3 2016. The reveal still stands as one of the most surprising from that show. Gamers figured the title would have some sort of exclusivity with Xbox One when it ultimately launched, but now we know that is not the case.

Today, Gearbox and Compulsion Games are confirming a PS4, Xbox One and PC launch for next year. The game will arrive on April 13 and won’t have any exclusivity, in regards to launch platforms. This is a huge win for gamers, regardless if you are playing on PS4, Xbox One or PC.

For Microsoft, this may be a bit of a blow to not have We Happy Few as a exclusive of any type. Their lineup is looking uncertain for the early months of Xbox One X’s life-cycle. Having a unique, and potentially, breakout experience like We Happy Few surely would have helped bolster their upcoming lineup.

As things stand now, the publisher will launch Forza Motorsport 7 and Crackdown 3 this year. Next year, State of Decay 2 and Sea of Thieves are due to arrive. Many expect the latter two to arrive during the first half of next year. Provided no games receive a delay, this is a strong lineup for Xbox One X to launch with.

However, the creepy and eerie adventure game of We Happy Few now feels stronger than ever. Stepping forward as a major, multi-platform release for next year is a huge move for Compulsion Games. It also has the potential to be a huge move for Gearbox Publishing, a group that’s been struggling to publish quality, new releases.

While there is no release exclusivity for We Happy Few, certain consoles will provide unique benefits to its install bases. Those who pre-order at specific retailers will receive a 15 percent discount from the $59.99 price. Microsoft Store, Steam, GOG.com and Humble Store buyers will receive access to the alpha version after pre-ordering.

Additionally, Windows 10 buyers will gain alpha access after they pre-order. PS4 gamers will earn an exclusive theme, though a pre-order is not specifically named as a requirement to get it. Those who played the game in Early Access and on Xbox Game Preview will receive the full game on April 13 at no additional cost.

In the above benefits, there is a slight favor to Xbox One or Microsoft gamers. However, they are subtleties compared to what it would have been had the game gone with console exclusivity. Compulsion Games retains “all creative control” of We Happy Few, which feels like a win for everyone.

We Happy Few will receive a “full-length story campaign,” where players can assume the role of three characters. Gamers can expect over 250 “unique encounters” as well. Gearbox and Compulsion are calling next year’s release of We Happy Few the “grander vision” for the game.

It’ll be interesting to see how We Happy Few turns out when it launches next year. Gearbox and Compulsion will release it on April 13, 2018 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. Stick around here at We Write Things for more on We Happy Few.
