Today, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment (WBIE) announced that Kumail Nanjiani will have a supporting role in the upcoming open-world title Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Many of you will remember Kumail from his hilarious roles in the TV show “Silicon Valley” and film “The Big Sick.”

Kumail will portray The Agonizer in Shadow of War. His personality is one that constantly second guesses his attempts at insults and being a villain in general. Clips of The Agonizer in action can be seen through the video WBIE released just this morning.

While Kumail is a hysterical comic, I’m not sure this is the right brand of comedy for a game like Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Its predecessor Shadow of Mordor didn’t exactly feature humor in a prominent way. This makes me wonder what WBIE is trying to accomplish by incorporating Kumail’s style of comedy.

Hollywood actors often play a role in video games and they do come across quite well. However, I worry that this style of humor might break gamers out of the immersion. The clips above of The Agonizer are funny, but they just feel a bit out of place. That said, being able to dominate The Agonizer and have him act on behalf of the player could present some funny possibilities.

Kumail played a huge role in this year’s Mass Effect Andromeda. I felt like his character came across very well and that this pairing made a whole lot of sense. Kumail played a more serious role very well, and his voice fit perfectly with the character of Jarun Tann. But playing an orc in Shadow of War? I’ll have to see it before I believe it.

At any rate, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is set for launch this coming Oct. 10. The game will be available on PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, Xbox One X, PC and Windows 10. Stick around here at We Write Things for more on Shadow of War.
