Deep Silver Volition is a studio that creates entertaining and hilarious experiences. Their speciality is in the open-world genre of gaming, with their recent franchise Saints Row becoming a mainstay brand for publisher Deep Silver. With a new generation of consoles though, Deep Silver is branching out into a new world.

Their upcoming project is Agents of Mayhem, an open-world, action game. It takes notes from Saints while establishing its own identity and thrilling gameplay. Combat is surprisingly dynamic, as gamers can switch from one character to another in an instant. This is a feature that refreshingly showcases combat in a unique way.

Interesting characters is something of a specialty for Volition, and Agents of Mayhem is no exception. Anoop Shekar, who is the project design director at Deep Silver Volition, spoke to We Write Things about what inspired the creation of Agents of Mayhem‘s villain, Gaunt.

“We wanted a good spectrum of villains on the LEGION side, from the serious and scary side to the sillier side. Gaunt is very much on the sillier side of the spectrum.  However, that doesn’t mean that he’s not a threat or that he shouldn’t be taken seriously.

“In terms of actual inspiration we were very much looking at famous pop stars that leveraged their fame through the internet and technology in general. There’s probably one specific pop star that we looked at the really get a good sense of how to present him. All I’ll say is that his name rhymes with Ustin Rebeer,” Shekar said.

It is fair to assume Shekar is referring to Justin Bieber, as if the photo above isn’t proof enough. This is a hilarious example of the characters that’ll be in Agents of Mayhem. However, the game will be an action-first experience with comedy as a secondary ingredient. This is something Volition is emphasizing as the game heads toward launch.

There looks to be plenty of potential for gamers in Agents of Mayhem. The world is diverse and beautiful, as its Seoul, South Korea setting looks marvelous. Gameplay feels dynamic and varied, with characters that’ll create all sorts of emotions. Volition’s Agents of Mayhem will release on Aug. 15 for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
